Attic Insulation Rebates in Ontario: What's Actually Still Available in 2026

No. The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant closed to new applicants in February 2024, and December 31, 2025 was the final deadline for participants to submit documents. It is now closed.

If you submitted everything by the applicable deadline, NRCan may still be processing your existing file. New applicants need to look at other federal, provincial, utility, or municipal programs instead.

The federal government's successor program is the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP), backed by roughly $800 million over five years. Unlike the original grant, CGHAP is targeted at low-to-median income households and renters, and it provides no-cost retrofits — including insulation — rather than a reimbursement homeowners apply for themselves.

CGHAP is rolling out province by province. Manitoba was first to launch in 2025, with British Columbia, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island added through 2026. As of this writing, Ontario does not yet have a signed delivery agreement or application portal, though it's expected to eventually participate. For eligible Ontario homeowners today, a currently active attic-insulation rebate runs through the Home Renovation Savings (HRS) program, delivered by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy. It is open to homeowners who are Enbridge Gas customers heating with natural gas, and also to homes connected to Ontario's electricity grid that heat with electricity, propane, oil or wood — so a gas account is not a requirement.

There are two paths. The standalone attic insulation rebate requires no home energy assessment. For a standard attic insulated to R-50, the amount depends on where the attic starts: up to $1,250 if it is at R-12 or less today, up to $1,000 from above R-12 to R-25, and up to $800 from above R-25 to R-35. Cathedral ceilings and flat roofs qualify for up to $750 (from R-25 or less to R-28) or up to $650 (from R-12 or less to R-20). This is the simpler route for a straightforward top-up or re-insulation project.

The multi-measure path requires a pre- and post-retrofit home energy assessment but unlocks a higher rebate ceiling — up to $7,700 specifically for insulation as part of a broader retrofit, within an overall program cap of $5,000 for natural gas heated homes or $10,000 for electrically heated homes. This path makes the most sense if you're planning insulation alongside other upgrades like air sealing, a heat pump, or new windows.

First, confirm the basics: you own the home; it is a single or semi-detached house, a row or townhouse, or a mobile home on a permanent foundation (stacked townhomes are excluded); it is not a new build occupied for six months or less; and you have not already received an attic insulation rebate from these programs. Next, decide which path fits your project: the standalone attic rebate if insulation is your only upgrade, or the multi-measure path if you're bundling insulation with other retrofits and want access to the higher rebate amounts.

For the standalone rebate, the work has to be done by a participating contractor, and 100% of the roof assembly area has to be insulated to the target R-value. Confirm both with your contractor before work begins rather than after — ask them directly whether they are registered with the program. Keep your contractor invoice and any required documentation — you'll need it to submit your rebate claim.

Because eligibility rules and rebate amounts are updated periodically, always confirm the current figures directly on Enbridge Gas's Home Renovation Savings page, or ask your contractor to walk you through what applies to your specific project before you commit.

Beyond Enbridge's program, some municipalities offer financing options rather than outright grants — Toronto's Home Energy Loan Program (HELP), for example, lets homeowners finance energy retrofits and repay through their property tax bill, which can make a larger project more manageable even without reducing the sticker price.

Rebate programs in this space change often, so it's worth asking your contractor directly what's currently available when you get a quote — a contractor who does this work regularly will usually know about new or updated programs before they're widely publicized.
